Trust me, I get it. Everyone loves hearing the words "Sterling silver" or "solid gold", and I really looked into it when designing Salt and Bone Jewelry. After hours of research, I opted for 316L stainless steel for several reasons.

Why 316L Stainless Steel?

Water Resistance

This was one of the most important factors for me. Why create jewelry with such a beachy vibe, but you can't actually wear it in the water? 316L stainless steel is a low-carbon, austenitic grade steel containing molybdenum, which means it has excellent resistance to salt water, fresh water, chlorine, and sweat. Perfect for everyday wear.

Hypoallergenic

My sister and I both have incredibly sensitive skin, which made finding a material that is guaranteed safe for skin so important. 316L Stainless steel has incredible biocompatibility, which is why it is used to make surgical equipment, implants (pins, screws), and piercing needles. This makes it perfect for anyone with even the highest skin sensitivities and metal allergies.

Durability

316L stainless steel offers exceptional durability, mostly due to its added molybdenum. This makes it ideal for marine, chemical, and high-heat environments. It has superior resistance to pitting, rust, and chemical attack compared to standard 304L stainless steel. This steel requires little to no maintenance other than the once-in-a-blue-moon cleaning, which makes this metal perfect for the everyday wear and tear of daily life.

Gold-toned Options

316L Stainless steel can be PVD gold-plated, allowing for that beautiful gold look without turning your skin green. PVD gold refers to a durable, thin coating of gold applied to metal using Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD). This is a high-tech vacuum process that bonds the finish more strongly than traditional plating. This process also makes it highly resistant to tarnish, scratches, and sweat.
