Their blunt snout and unique, serrated, notched teeth allow them to eat almost anything. This includes sea turtles, birds, and even garbage.  They are found globally in temperate and tropical waters. Although shark attacks on humans are truly a rare occurrence, one of the most famous incidents of a shark attacking a human involved a tiger shark. In 2003, on Tunnels Beach in Kauai, Hawaii, Bethany Hamilton lost her left arm when a shark mistook her for prey while lying on her surfboard in open water. Within weeks, Hamilton was back out in the water relearning to surf with only her remaining arm.

Sand Tiger Shark

Although this shark looks incredibly menacing, the sand tiger is generally docile and slow-moving. As adults, this shark reaches 6.5 to 10.5 ft and feeds on small fish, eels, crustaceans, and rays. The sand tiger has a unique feature as it actually gulps air and stores it in their stomach to aid in hovering.

The snaggletooth shark has a long, slender body, only reaching a max of 8 ft, but they generally are much smaller. They feed primarily on bony fish, crabs, rays, and cephalopods. The snaggletooth is also one of the 70% of shark species that give birth to live young.

Nurse Shark

Often called "cat shark" or "sleepy shark", the 7-10 ft nurse shark gets its nicknames from its incredibly docile and slow-moving personality. This shark is a bottom-dwelling shark that feeds on crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish by literally just sucking them into its mouth.  They are found in warm shallow coastal waters and are often seen by divers/snorkelers

Although their cruising speed is quite slow, they use their maximum speed to hunt mackerel, herring, and squid

Bull Shark

Ranging from 11 to 13 ft, the bull shark is most commonly known for its ability to live in both fresh and saltwater. They are often found in shallow coastal areas and rivers. They are mostly opportunistic hunters using keen senses rather than eyes, which are smaller than most species, to ambush prey like fish, turtles, and birds.

Mako Shark

Mako Shark

Sleek, fast, and perfectly designed for open ocean hunting, the mako shark is essentially built like a torpedo and holds the record for the world's fastest shark. Rocketing through the water at 43 to 46 mph, the mako hunts squid, tuna, and swordfish. Known for its impressive breaching abilities, this shark can launch its body 20 to 30 feet in the air to ambush prey or escape threats.

Controlling fish population around and on the reefs allows for corals to grow without worry of overgrazing by the small fish that also call the reef home. Reef sharks also don't need to swim if they don't want to. They can breathe by pushing water over their gills while they rest on the sea floor.

The dark grey top half makes it nearly impossible to spot from above by prey, and anything lurking below can't spot it looking up due to the bright white underbelly and the sun coming through the water.

Unlike many sharks, which are happier to be by themselves, lemon sharks often gather socially in tropical waters on reefs, in estuaries, and in mangrove forests to feed on fish and rays. They are known to be relatively docile with humans but are considered vulnerable due to habitat loss.

Their diet consists of marine worms, crustaceans, clams, and small fish. These beautiful creatures are bottom dwellers and have no intention of hurting humans, but can be difficult to see on the bottom, often resulting in accidental barbing. If walking through sandy flats, it's always recommended to shuffle your feet rather than walk. The shuffle will often startle the ray and cause it to move out of the way.
