Trust me, I get it. Everyone (including myself) loves Sterling silver or solid gold, and I really looked into it when designing Salt and Bone Jewelry. After hours and hours of research, I opted to go with 316L stainless steel for more than a few reasons.
This was one of the most important factors for me. Why create jewelry with such a beachy vibe, but you can't actually wear it in the water? 316L stainless steel is a low-carbon, austenitic grade steel containing molybdenum, which means it has excellent resistance to salt water, fresh water, chlorine, and sweat. Perfect for everyday wear.
Another important factor for me becuase my sister and I both have incredibly sensitive skin. Almost all piercing and surgical instruments are made from austenitic or martensitic stainless steel. This makes it perfect for anyone with even the highest skin sensitivities and metal allergies.
316L stainless steel has a superior pitting resistance compared to standard 304L stainless steel, is incredibly resistant to scratches, and everyday wear and tear damage.
316L Stainless steel can be PVD gold-plated, allowing for that beautiful gold look without turning your skin green. Perfect for us gold girlies!
